The news media are among the most effective vehicles for disrupting and undermining a society. I have strong disagreements with the free press about how it operates and what it should be covering. But those disagreements do not obviate the fundamental role that a free and robust press plays in a self-governing people. In primitive societies, the role of the village elders was to keep an eye on the young men and women around them – to help prevent the aggressive poaching of food and the rape of women. But in America, when we proclaim that ideas and information thrives best in a free and diverse society, we are not only speaking from a place of political conviction; we are also recognizing something essential about the way an enlightened people should view their institutions of government.
Like the founders of our country, I believe in the transformative powers of a free society. If we care about the health of our democracy, government, economy, and foreign policy – if we care about preserving our values and our institutions of government – then we had better figure out how to overcome the inertia that has gripped us for so long. This means offering a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
America is the most successful and powerful nation on earth. There is no doubt that we can defeat our enemies, but only if we stay true to our values, forgo expedience for principle, and realize that our freedom depends upon the freedom of others.
In two weeks, we find ourselves facing a choice that is truly historic. After eight years of the policies that George W. Bush put into place, we can either stare in dismay at an America that has lost its way, or we can turn the page and continue on a new course. For that reason, I have long argued that having just one more election won’t be enough. One more victory, I’ve always believed, will lead to further cynicism, further partisanship, and more gridlock. The American people are not demagogues. They are not fools. They know the difference between leadership and a scam, between courage and a soundbite.
